If Olivia had felt like she’d been on the receiving end of some stares the previous morning, it was nothing like walking into the station that morning. Not only did people glance, they stopped what they were doing to watch her.

“Does everyone here know?” she whispered to Dean. He’d been quick to usher her inside of Newquay, wrapping his arm around her shoulder as though that would protect her from any rogue agent, ready to kill strangers in order to get through to her.

At first, she’d been overwhelmed by his smell—sandalwood and orange and something distinctly Dean. In that moment, she didn’t know if it was comforting or stifling.

“Unfortunately,” he replied quietly, continuing to guide her through the halls. “I’m not sure who spread the news, but it got around quickly once it was out.”

Olivia winced.

“What does Collins think?” she asked.

“About the new development?” Her former partner’s voice was distracted. “He was the one who made sure I was on my way to get you.”

They passed by Olivia’s office, continuing rather than slowing down.

“Where are we going?” she demanded, stopping in her tracks to make DI Lawrence truly face her. Even as he turned to look at her, he struggled to maintain eye contact.

“You’re treating me like I’m a ghost, Dean. I’m right here.” Olivia’s left fingers curled into a fist as she pressed it against her chest.

“I know. I’m sorry,” he replied, fidgeting with his tie. “Can I just take you there and then I’ll stop being so on edge?”

Olivia eyed him warily. She supposed it was time to put her trust in him. He’d never do anything to hurt her, and wherever he was taking her and whatever he had planned, she knew he had her best interests at heart.

“Fine,” Olivia sighed. She let him continue to guide her through Newquay, feeling as though she were being paraded throughout the station.

After what felt like an obnoxiously long detour through the administrative offices and two other departments, Dean wound them down to the basement. They pulled into Clara’s office, and he rushed to close the door as soon as Olivia entered.

Clara peeked out from behind her computer, sporting an outfit so pink it was almost violent in its brightness. And because it was Clara, she managed to pull it off seamlessly.

“Oh, Liv!” she exclaimed, rushing over to pull her friend into an embrace. “I’m so glad you’re here and safe. Honestly, I’m so sorry to hear about all of this shit.”

Olivia felt herself relax more than she had since being picked up at Mills’.

“Me too,” she smiled before turning her attention back to her former partner. “Now you can explain what we’re doing here?”

“My idea,” Clara interrupted before Dean could begin to explain himself. Confusion sprawled across Olivia’s face, the whole conversation feeling like a spilled ball of yarn, all tangled and confused.

“I’ll explain,” Clara continued, pulling her friend back to her computer screens. “We knew that we wanted to bring you into the station after… well, you know.”
