If Olivia had felt like sheâd been on the receiving end of some stares the previous morning, it was nothing like walking into the station that morning. Not only did people glance, they stopped what they were doing to watch her.
âDoes everyone here know?â she whispered to Dean. Heâd been quick to usher her inside of Newquay, wrapping his arm around her shoulder as though that would protect her from any rogue agent, ready to kill strangers in order to get through to her.
At first, sheâd been overwhelmed by his smellâsandalwood and orange and something distinctly Dean. In that moment, she didnât know if it was comforting or stifling.
âUnfortunately,â he replied quietly, continuing to guide her through the halls. âIâm not sure who spread the news, but it got around quickly once it was out.â
Olivia winced.
âWhat does Collins think?â she asked.
âAbout the new development?â Her former partnerâs voice was distracted. âHe was the one who made sure I was on my way to get you.â
They passed by Oliviaâs office, continuing rather than slowing down.
âWhere are we going?â she demanded, stopping in her tracks to make DI Lawrence truly face her. Even as he turned to look at her, he struggled to maintain eye contact.
âYouâre treating me like Iâm a ghost, Dean. Iâm right here.â Oliviaâs left fingers curled into a fist as she pressed it against her chest.
âI know. Iâm sorry,â he replied, fidgeting with his tie. âCan I just take you there and then Iâll stop being so on edge?â
Olivia eyed him warily. She supposed it was time to put her trust in him. Heâd never do anything to hurt her, and wherever he was taking her and whatever he had planned, she knew he had her best interests at heart.
âFine,â Olivia sighed. She let him continue to guide her through Newquay, feeling as though she were being paraded throughout the station.
After what felt like an obnoxiously long detour through the administrative offices and two other departments, Dean wound them down to the basement. They pulled into Claraâs office, and he rushed to close the door as soon as Olivia entered.
Clara peeked out from behind her computer, sporting an outfit so pink it was almost violent in its brightness. And because it was Clara, she managed to pull it off seamlessly.
âOh, Liv!â she exclaimed, rushing over to pull her friend into an embrace. âIâm so glad youâre here and safe. Honestly, Iâm so sorry to hear about all of this shit.â
Olivia felt herself relax more than she had since being picked up at Millsâ.
âMe too,â she smiled before turning her attention back to her former partner. âNow you can explain what weâre doing here?â
âMy idea,â Clara interrupted before Dean could begin to explain himself. Confusion sprawled across Oliviaâs face, the whole conversation feeling like a spilled ball of yarn, all tangled and confused.
âIâll explain,â Clara continued, pulling her friend back to her computer screens. âWe knew that we wanted to bring you into the station after⦠well, you know.â
